Paul Degenstein
title: Chief Creative Officer
bio
“We'll make sure your creative campaign delivers the right message to the right people at the right time.”
A communications professional since 1988, Paul has gained unique expertise in strategic communications, message development, and creative execution. Before joining NOW, Paul held senior communications posts throughout the country, including serving as press secretary and speech writer for a national political leader. As a member of the NOW team, Paul has developed numerous award-winning campaigns for major union, electoral, education, health and social justice clients. Paul’s education includes graduate studies at l’Institut d’études politiques in Paris, and he holds a Master’s Degree from McGill University.
Rosemary Chambers
title: Account Manager
bio
“I always try to understand the needs of the client’s audience just as much as I understand the client’s needs. That’s what makes for the very best and most effective communications.”
Rosemary has racked up over 20 years in both client service and project management roles. Her extensive background in these areas give her that extra “je ne sais quoi” at finding ways to help clients achieve their communications goals. In Rosemary’s time with NOW she has assisted clients ranging from government agencies to unions in finding ways to improve both their internal and external communications. She not only serves the very important role of scheduling client meetings around Paul’s nap schedule, she also gives back to the community by sitting on the boards of both the Winnipeg International Children’s Festival and The Forks North Portage. Experienced in public opinion research, she understands that successful campaigns come from understanding your audience and reaching them with well-targeted messages.
Ron Johnson
title: Founding Partner, Stategic Advisor
bio
“Progressive values are the touchstone that launched NOW Communications and drive the work we do for clients.”
Ron co-founded NOW in 1991 and served as President until 2009. He quickly built the company’s reputation as a highly successful strategic communications firm, one with an ever-growing list of satisfied clients that spans the country. Ron’s highly successful social marketing campaigns have launched dozens of public service initiatives and built impressive public support for a wide variety of projects and actions. (That, and they earned us more trophies than we actually have display room for in our office.) A graduate of the BC Institute of Technology Broadcast Communications program in 1971, Ron continues to provide NOW clients with unrivalled strategic advice. Ron also volunteers his skills to democracy training projects abroad.
Maya Russell
title: Managing Director
bio
“I love pulling together teams of people to strategically address our clients’ needs. Our staff work hard to get results for our clients because we share their values and know that our own success is tied to theirs.”
Maya is the maven of multi-tasking. A go-getter in every facet of her life, she brought her vigor and passion for progressive change to NOW in 2002. As an account manager for some of our biggest and smallest clients (as only measured by campaign size…we obviously have no small clients as measured by worth), Maya is an expert at managing projects and bringing out the best in our team. Her extensive background includes working and volunteering with non-profits, student groups, unions, women’s organizations, government and political groups. She is driven to use the best practices in social marketing and to learn from every issue and campaign she works on. Also a talented musician and involved in community-led policing, Maya continues to exhaust and amaze us all whenever she talks about how much she crams into a week.
Jillian Boulton
title: Office Administration
bio
“Organization and coordination can significantly impact any project. My goal is to take the glitches out of the process…so clients can feel at ease while working with the NOW team.”
An original member of the team since 1991, Jillian is the welcoming face and voice of NOW Communications. She takes care of everything from travel arrangements, to booking meetings and organizing our office – making sure everything runs smoothly for both staff and clients.
Jillian also ensures NOW produces error-free printed materials. With a BA in English from UBC, a degree in French as a Second Language from Université Laval, and her proofreading training from SFU, she has a flair for languages and an eye for detail. That, and she always gets us tasty little treats for meetings…and who doesn’t love that? Honestly, if everybody were like her, the world would be a better place.
Michele Della Mattia
title: Account Manager
bio
“The name ‘NOW’ seems to be more of an attitude than a title some days, and I find it very rewarding to get last-minute changes through for a client. Our ability to be so flexible and responsive is something our clients really appreciate.”
Michele somehow walks the line of seeming to know everything without coming across as a know-it-all. Having worked at NOW since 1999, Michele has played a major role in helping our company become the one it is today. She is an experienced administrator, an expert at media coordination and ad trafficking, a pro at figuring out ACTRA contracts (an understanding which admittedly eludes the rest of us) and a dedicated account manager. Basically, she is a great asset to clients and staff alike. Thankfully, Michele is also a whiz with technology…something that comes in handy when we are all in the boardroom and confused about which remote we should use to get our DVD player to run on our computer.
Reamick Lo
title: Account Manager
bio
“My goal to is to have every client walk away from their project happy…I want them to feel their goals have been met and that we added value to their campaign and organization as a whole.”
Reamick brought her extensive background in project management and client services to NOW in 2006. Having worked in senior roles with both elected representatives and in government, she adds a wealth of strategic planning and implementation experience to our team. Reamick is an expert at public speaking; she provides training and leads workshops that enable participants to engage their audiences with impact. She currently serves as the Lieutenant Governor of Marketing for Toastmasters in BC. Reamick has a knack for keeping projects on track: a trait that has paid off for union, government and political clients alike. She’s also fluent in Cantonese, has an education in film production, she can fly a plane and perform acrobatic stunts on a trapeze…basically she makes the rest of us around the water cooler feel horrifically dull and unadventurous.
Marie Della Mattia
title: President/CEO
bio
“Our clients work hard to make people’s lives better – we will do whatever we can to help them succeed.”
Marie likes to get into people’s heads – what motivates, what inspires and what moves them. She brings that curiosity and a rigorous strategic analysis to all our clients’ challenges. And it gets results.
Whether it’s launching a new public service initiative with eye-catching TV creative, or bringing public attention to a new issue in a multi-media campaign, or crafting a long-term communications strategy, Marie has the vision and the experience to develop clear, effective messages that cut through and move your audience.
Marie’s passion and energy drive her workshops on topics that range from advertising techniques for non-profits to democracy development, from spokesperson training to strategic communications planning. Believe us when we tell you that nobody in the room is ever bored.
Kristen Keighley-Wight
title: Creative and Production Services
bio
“Our clients do great work in their communities. I try to honour that commitment by finding new ways to deliver innovative, on-target and well-crafted messages.”
Kristen has that rare combination of youth and experience. She joined the NOW team in 2006, bringing an educational background and professional resumé in both communications and media development. A former TV producer and journalist, she is driven to find interesting and innovative ways to tell the many stories of our clients. Her critical analysis is supported by her practical production skills, and she has been a major part of NOW’s award-winning ads. On top of that, Kristen has spent over a decade volunteering and working in a number of non-profits with youth, families and people with special needs. Needless to say, we would hate her if she wasn’t such a wonderful person.
Rupinder Kang
title: Director of Client Services
bio
“I am not satisfied by satisfactory outcomes. I want our clients to be excited to work with us and thrilled by the success they experience after having done so. It’s about more than just getting the job done.”
Rupinder’s talents were added to the NOW line-up in 1999. As the Director of Client Services, she takes great pride in keeping projects on schedule, on budget and on message. Rupinder has managed accounts ranging from the BC Ministry of Health to the Elementary Teachers’ Federation of Ontario. She is passionate about social advocacy and has a great deal of experience organizing events and conferences to help raise awareness around social justice issues. Fluent in Punjabi, Rupinder makes sure that ethnic advertising is not only translated well, but that the message also resonates within the community. Professional to the hilt, her beautiful and open personality lights up our boardroom.
Jim Lowe
title: Designer
bio
"Great design is more than just ‘a nice look.’ In order to really get that title, it needs to communicate a message, fulfill an intended purpose and be versatile enough to work across media. I love finding interesting ways to use design to help create memorable and effective campaigns.”
Jim has been a design junkie his whole life – producing everything from architecture, furniture and industrial designs to print and online multimedia. Joining NOW in 2006, Jim has helped many of our clients use design to increase the power of their brand and the impact of their messaging. His extensive experience includes 10 years as a solo design director and he has worked with non-profits, government agencies, political and trade union clients. He has formal training in design, architecture and web design, and served as a Sessional Instructor at the Emily Carr University of Art & Design. Jim has a great eye for detail and insists that his favourite colour is Pantone 8883.
Wendy Snowdon
title: Accountant
bio
“Carefully keeping track of budgets is more than just good business. It allows us to make sure our clients get the most effective and efficient use of every dollar they spend.”
A treasured member of NOW’s founding team, Wendy has decades of experience in accounting for advertising agencies. In her time at NOW she has balanced budgets of multi-million dollar campaigns, and thousands of much smaller ones. No matter what the scale – and let’s be honest, most of them are smaller – her dedication, diligence, attention to detail and professional knowledge keep our clients’ projects on track and on budget. She somehow also manages to keep all of us in line too. Mysteriously, Wendy owns an estate on the Cayman Islands and travels there by private jet.
Victor Dobchuk
title: Producer
bio
“In the end, I want the client to be really proud of what we produced together. I bring the right people, places and things together to make that happen.”
Victor is our very own “King of Kensington” – you can’t walk down a street in Winnipeg without running into somebody who knows him. Victor has years of experience producing broadcast-quality video projects and TV spots. His past experience includes working for CKY TV News, and he has earned a great reputation for his video advocacy work. His work with NOW and our clients results in impactful, moving and award-winning ads. Victor is an active member in the industry and has worked on the Board of Manitoba Film and Sound and the Manitoba Motion Pictures Industry Association. In his (not so secret) other life, he works as a locations manager in the feature film industry. He also has been an active member in a number of community organizations: including the Winnipeg Folk Festival and the West End Cultural Centre.
Carrie Ann Barlow
title: Media Buyer
bio
“The smallest changes in how a media buy is put together can make a real difference to its overall impact. Paying attention to the details, and understanding how they affect each other, is the key to developing efficient and successful campaigns.”
Carrie is a leader in the field of media buying. Unbelievably approaching 25 years in the field, she is an expert at knowing how to connect and target campaigns and audiences. She’s an amazing negotiator and makes sure each client gets the most of every media dollar. In fact, we each try to take her with us whenever we have to make big personal purchases! Her client base has ranged from Ford Canada and London Drugs to the many unions and political parties NOW Communications works with.
Carrie is passionate about social advocacy and effecting positive change. She teaches strategic media planning and buying in her “spare” time, and has earned many accolades and much recognition for the leadership role she plays in the industry. Also the former media director for all 19 BC government ministries, and several crown corporations, her experience is unparalleled. All this, and somehow she always maintains her quiet and reserved demeanor (hmm…excuse the cough). Carrie’s understanding of the habits, trends and views of the Canadian marketplace make her an integral part of our media campaigns…it’s her passion that makes her one of our favourite parts.

Robb Gibbs
title: Acting Creative Director, New Media Team Leader
bio
Robb is a self-proclaimed generalist...although we consider him our “go-to guy.” He enjoys all stages of a project: from strategic development through content generation to final production. Robb manages to balance his keen technical skills with his ability to find creative solutions when challenges arise.
A communications professional for as long as Morrissey’s been singing, he has worked in the public, private and union sectors in BC, and as a communications and technical educator to Emirati women in Dubai. His most recent focus has been on strategic design and development of online, video and interactive platforms. We are really excited to have his dry sense of humour, years of proven experience and wide range of talents in the NOW line-up.
