- NOW’s communications work for public employees in Nova Scotia (NSGEU), Ontario (OPSEU), Manitoba (MGEU), Alberta (CUPE), and BC (BCGEU, BCTF, HEU, HSA, PEA) has helped contribute to the successful prevention or resolution of a large number of sectoral and local employer/union disputes.
- The Manitoba Teachers’ Society 2003 public awareness campaign raised traffic to the MTS web site by 70%. Several thousand visitors accessed the Back to School study tips pages. BC’s Hospital Employees’ Union anti-privatization campaign 2003 achieved dramatic changes in public awareness: over the two-month period of the media campaign, public opinion shifted from narrowly supporting privatization of hospital support services by a 5% margin to opposing privatization by a 20% margin.
- The BC Teachers’ Federation public awareness campaign Fall 2004-Spring 2005: The teachers’ campaign to increase public awareness of government education cuts and the cuts’ impact on students had dramatic results. In October 2004, 46% of public believed the government was on right track on public education. By May 2005 (when the advertising ended) only 29.8% believed government was on the right track.
- BC Teachers’ bargaining advertising and communications 2005-2006: Teachers emerged from their Fall 2005 job action with greater public support for their issues than when entering the job action – and with significantly more public support than the government. Teachers achieved important gains for children in the classroom in terms of class size, support for children with special needs, and increased classroom resources. Members will be voting on a contract that includes key improvements including salary increases.
- BC Hospital Employees’ Union bargaining advertising and communications 2006: Members gained a contract that included significant wage increases, job security, and protection of crucial hospital services affecting patient care from privatization.
